My advice:

To best handle this thickness, I recommend working it on Monk's Cloth with a wide weave (even the tightly woven cloth will accommodate it without problems, you'll just have to push the large needle a little harder). Monk's cloth is the only fabric with a strong enough and open enough weave to accommodate the passage of Regular needles and such a substantial yarn.
